ReelOzInd! 2022 announced with the theme ‘suara/voice’

ReelOzInd! Short Film Competition and Festival is back in 2022 and can’t wait to share its festival of short films with audiences in Indonesia, Australia and beyond. This year our theme is ‘suara/voice’.

Now in its seventh year, ReelOzInd! uses the medium of short film to create lasting community connections and build understanding between Indonesia and Australia. The festival welcomes short film submissions from filmmakers young and old, spanning categories including animation, documentary and fiction.

A prize pool of $15,000 AUD will be on offer, judged by a jury of leading film professionals and critics from both Indonesia and Australia. A people’s choice award also offers viewers the chance to show their support for their favourite shortlisted films.

“ReelOzInd! is a celebration of storytelling – using our voices, communicating with each other and making a noise – as a way to entertain, enlighten, engage, educate and energise,” said festival director Jemma Purdey.

“In 2022, more than ever, the world continues to face challenges that need individuals, nations and the global community as a whole to come together to share stories – to make connections that enable us to find solutions and new pathways.”

Submissions will open in FilmFreeway from today, 11 April 2022. The festival itself launches in a hybrid format in October and runs through to December 2022.

“After two years online, we can’t wait to meet our audiences in-person again at our pop-up screenings in collaboration with our wonderful partners and supporters in Indonesia and Australia,” Purdey continued. “Most of all, we can’t wait to see what our amazingly creative and innovative filmmakers have in store for us – we can’t wait to hear their voices!”

Established in 2016, ReelOzInd! has reached over 80 communities in both countries with a live audience of thousands and an ever-growing online presence. The festival pivoted to an online-only festival in both 2020 and 2021; it continues to offer access to previous events through its ReelOzInd! Retrospective 2016-2021 initiative.

ReelOzInd! 2022’s jury will be detailed in the coming weeks.
