Celebrating its 9th iteration, the festival’s Indonesian premiere will be held outside Java for the first time
ReelOzInd! 2024 will premiere in simultaneous screenings in Melbourne at ACMI and in Samarinda, at Universitas Mulawarman on 24 October.
With the exception of a pause during the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, the festival has celebrated its Indonesian and Australian premieres with live screenings held on the same day since it began in 2016. Melbourne’s ACMI has been the festival’s Australian base, and in Indonesia the festival has partnered with a range of Festival Hosts to bring the premiere to communities in Yogyakarta, Malang, Bandung and Surabaya.
In 2024 ReelOzInd! is thrilled to partner with the Faculty of Cultural Science (Fakultas Ilmu Budaya), Universitas Mulawarman to host the Indonesian premiere in Samarindra, the capital of East Kalimantan province. As the festival’s director, Jemma Purdey, noted,
“This year the festival’s theme is diversity/keberagaman, so it is especially fitting. We are very grateful that our friends at FIB UNMUL have accepted our invitation to host the premiere in a part of Indonesia we have yet to visit. East and Central Kalimantan have a thriving creative and filmmaking community, and we have been privileged to showcase the work of talented filmmakers from the region in past festivals, receiving excellent support for the pop-up festival as well. We can’t wait to work with FIB UNMUL to bring an exciting premiere to Samarinda in late October!”
The festival screening will feature the short films judged by our 2024 Jury of eminent filmmakers and creatives as the best in the categories of documentary, animation, fiction and young filmmaker (13-18 years). The winners will take home prizes to the value of $AUD15,000.
