The ReelOzInd! Australia Indonesia Short Film Festival premieres the winning films in Yogyakarta and Melbourne, adds more dates, and offers viewers a chance to vote for their favourite film.
The 2017 festival season of ReelOzInd! kicked off on Wednesday 27 September with two packed premieres at Institut Francais d’Indonesie in Yogyakarta and the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in Melbourne.
The Yogyakarta premiere announced the winners and screened a selection of winning and special mention films. Professor Krishna Sen, former Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Western Australia and ReelOzInd! judge, presented the Best Film award to Dery Prananda for Arohuai/Missing Home, a documentary developed with Kartika Pratiwi and shot in Melbourne. Arohuai/Missing Home also won Best Collaboration and Best Documentary. The Best Film award was shared between Arohuai/Missing Home and Aquiescence by Fierrany Halita, which also won Best Animation.
Fellow winners Rose Clynes and Jonathan Soerjoko (Best Fiction for Lost/Hilang) also discussed their film on stage, with youth jury member Geildyan Athallah Dwiputra in the crowd.
At the Melbourne premiere, Joel Backwell opened proceedings. Backwell is the Executive Director of the International Education Division at the Victorian Department of Education and Training and a former Trade Commissioner to Malaysia and Brunei, who has spent much time working and studying in Indonesia.
Film critic and host of Movie Metropolis Peter Krausz moderated a forum discussion with shortlisted and winning filmmakers, including Ben Mortley (Mukhtar’s Story), Jenae Hall (Entangled), Mark Pearce (A Gentle Giant), and Olivia Hector (Play Like A Girl).
After the success of the premiere screenings, ReelOzInd! began its journey around both nations, screening at IndoFest in Adelaide, universities in Malang and Tangerang, and at the National Film and Sound Archive in Canberra.
There are 14 pop-up screenings still to go, with new events recently added at the University of Melbourne, Universitas Multimedia Nusantara in Tangerang, Cominos House in Cairns, and at El Champion Café in Samarinda. Full dates can be found here.
Film fans who can’t make it to the events are welcomed to experience the virtual festival online, where anyone can view the shortlisted films and vote for the People’s Choice award here. The award will be announced after the final festival event in November.
